GitHub spent a Monday being a very expensive read-only museum

August 2026 GitHub outage broke Actions, PRs and half of all downloads

The market's verdict: -1.6% on MSFT in the week after.

Status: Fixed. Working as intended, eventually.

What actually happened

On August 17, 2026, Microsoft owned GitHub confirmed a platform wide outage: roughly twenty percent error rates across the web and API, and about fifty percent failure rates on source and archive downloads, with Actions, pull requests, issues, webhooks and authentication bending or breaking for around eight hours. Every CI pipeline that mattered spent the day queued behind a status page. For a platform whose slogan is where the world builds software, the world got a rare chance to see what it is like when it doesn't.

This one is officially acknowledged.
