July's patch overheated Dells until an emergency fix arrived
July 2026 update clashed with Intel drivers, overheating some Dell PCs
The market's verdict: +2.9% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
The June 23, 2026 preview update (KB5095093) collided with Intel's platform framework driver on certain Dell machines, causing unexpected shutdowns, overheating and power problems, with the offending driver flagged in Device Manager for anyone who wanted a souvenir. Microsoft shipped an emergency out-of-band update on July 20. Most users had been shielded by a safeguard hold, a sentence which confirms the company knew exactly which machines would catch fire, metaphorically, mostly.
This one is officially acknowledged.
