Minecraft Java players forced onto Microsoft accounts; holdouts locked out

What actually happened
Mojang account holders had until March 10, 2022 to migrate to Microsoft accounts, after which migration became mandatory and unmigrated players were progressively locked out of Java Edition entirely, launcher, multiplayer and all. The final door closed in stages through 2023, and accounts that never migrated are now unrecoverable, purchases and all. Millions of players did cross over; a subset who missed the deadline lost games they had paid for, for the crime of not checking an email. Two weeks earlier, Windows 11 Pro had learned to require the same account. The ecosystem is one login now, like it or not.

February 2022: Windows needs your Microsoft account. March 2022: so does Minecraft.
