The TV TV TV studio closed before finishing its TV
Xbox Entertainment Studios shut down inside the 18,000-person layoffs
The market's verdict: +1.8% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
Xbox Entertainment Studios, the original-television division formed to anchor the Xbox One's TV-first reveal, was closed on July 17, 2014 as part of Satya Nadella's 18,000-person layoffs, the largest in company history, taking about 200 jobs with it. The studio's completed output amounted to an Atari-landfill documentary and Halo: Nightfall. The heads departed by October, and the experiment in making the game console a cable box ended the way most console TV strategies end: quietly, inside a memo about restructuring. The reveal had devoted most of its runtime to television; the division lasted thirteen months after launch.
This one is well documented.
