Halo 5 ended couch co-op, and the couch noticed
Halo 5: Guardians shipped with no split-screen in any mode
The market's verdict: -1.9% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
Halo 5: Guardians, shipped October 27, 2015, was the first mainline Halo with no split-screen co-op or multiplayer in any mode, a decision 343 called one of the most difficult the studio had ever made, in service of 60fps. The console FPS that had defined living-room gaming for a generation defined it no longer. The backlash produced Bonnie Ross's February 2017 pledge that every future Halo FPS would have split-screen, the promise this site already lists being broken in 2022. Removed, promised, reneged: a complete trilogy of disappointment in three entries.
This one is officially acknowledged.
They did it more than once
Removed in Halo 5. Promised back in 2017. Cancelled again in 2022. A trilogy.
