Halo broke its "split screen forever" promise from 2017
Halo Infinite local split-screen campaign co-op cancelled
The market's verdict: -1.3% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
On September 1, 2022, 343 Industries cancelled local split screen campaign co op for Halo Infinite, breaking studio head Bonnie Ross's 2017 pledge that Halo would always support split screen going forward. Online co op arrived that November; couch co op never did. Fans subsequently found a fully working split screen mode hidden behind a menu glitch, which Microsoft then patched out, a two step that turned a broken promise into a confirmed feature removal. The Xbox was built on living room Halo; the living room was updated to require a second console.
This one is officially acknowledged.
They did it more than once
Removed in Halo 5. Promised back in 2017. Cancelled again in 2022. A trilogy.
